Geekin' Weekend project

The 10 year old ( Pentium I ) HamsterTracker™-Data-Collector-PC,
was showing signs of aging; the internal clock was lagging a stunning 2 hours every day.

That's not really what you need, when timing the treadmill activity.

So this Gem of a project started 9 weeks ago;
the first five weeks has been spent on comparing various computer components,
after consulting friends and collegues, HamsterTracker™ came up with a new 'Dream Machine'!

After the OK from the HamsterTracker™-Financial Department,
the HamsterTracker™-Order department, got the order to order!

After a week it all came in (this was two weeks ago, last friday) ;

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" Now that's a huge puzzle ahead ! " - Mathijs

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" Here's the heart of the system installed;
an 'AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ Processor',
running at only 65 Watts (that's less than half of regular processors!)
" - Mathijs

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" The now end result
(probably there are going to be some additions in the future)
of the new HamsterTracker™-'Dream Machine'-Server.
It's emphasis is on (besides value for money),
SILENCE & SPEED
while being very energy efficient !
" - Mathijs

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" Pretty nice designed case, isn't it ? " - Mathijs

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" Then I was a disc-jockey for like 10 days,
intalling, updating, rebooting, testing, upgrading and re-rebooting for almost every little software tool I use.
" - Mathijs

The HamsterTracker(tm) new server.
" Semi-Final installation,
retire-ing the ol' Pentium I
and Pentium III along the way !
" - Mathijs

I've opted to only use one computer, simply for energy efficiency.
AND this new 'Dream Machine' is sooo fast, it can handle all jobs even with out a sweat.

There are still some problems though; the webcams: I can't seem to get them all up running at this time.
Right now only three webcams are online...
As well as some other little details, which you'll not be bothered with right now.

Meanwhile, when busy Assembling and installing,
Lucy was in her meditations room:

I took a couple of photo's, only to discover they were all out of focus,
therefore two small ( = hiding blurry-ness ) shots of Lucy:

you should take a bite from ALL of it...

Cookin' 4 Lucy: micro Veggie Pizza

Today it's

World Animal Day

at least here in the Netherlands it is.

A good day to do some Cookin' 4 Lucy style activity to pamper Lucy.
Here's what you'll need:

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Tools:      Food:
Knife      Flour Tortillas
Whiskey glass      Carot
Other glass      Apple
Scissors      Cucumber
Corer      Pine- and Melon-seeds (3 of each)
Workspace      Grated Gouda Cheese
       Fresh Parsley

Make sure all tools and veggies are washed really well before you begin.
And don't forget to wash your hands!

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Open the Flour Tortillas with scissors.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Use the smallest Diameter glass as a cut-around-guide.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Remove the cut out Flour Tortilla,
This will be our Veggie Pizza's Bottom.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Use Corer to get a perfectly cylindrical shape.
This is the Veggie Pepperoni Sausage.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Cut a few thin slices from the just made Pepperoni Sausage.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Cut a V-shaped wedge from the reddest part of an apple. This will be the paprika substitute.

Because I was not 1000% sure if hamsters are allowed to have paprika,
I took the safe route and substituted this with Apple.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Remove some of the apple, too much is too much.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Cut into paprica like blocks, and carefully place (red side up) on top of pizza.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Thinly slice some cucumber (leavin' the green stuff on)

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Add some fresh parsley.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Then add some cheese.

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Finally add three Melon-Seeds. (They're there for imitating olives),
and some Pine-Seeds, imitating Pine-Seeds..

Then I used an upside down Whiskey glass as a servin' table.
These glasses have generally a larger diameter,
as well as weight. I wouldn't want Lucy to knock the thing over.

The final result:

Cookin' micro Veggie Pizza.
Makes you kind'a hungry doesn't it?

Then I served it to Lucy:

My hamster Lucy about to try her Veggie Pizza.
" Dude... For ME ??? ... REaLLY ??? " - Lucy

Great Guestbook Entry Question

Judith from the UK asked the following a little while ago,

"Is it possible to see a photo of her next to something else - for scale?"

This got the HamsterTracker™-Scaling-Dept. working overtime,
trying to think up a generic way to show Lucy's scale.

You can't use local products,
or a tape-measure; scales can differ from country to country.

So the HamsterTracker™-Archive-Dept. was contacted, to help out:

Geekin' Weekend project & Lucy

I've been working on the iButton network wiring

Remember day 27, when I started
this modular project?

Using standard modem/phone jacks and wire,
modding a few ('untwisting' the cross-wire),
this is the result:

Livingroom The Livingroom temperature sensor
Extention plug This allows more modules to connect (using an [telephone-] extention cord)
Misc. An unused temperature sensor,
which is used as a Livingroom backup sensor.

I couldn't wait to tell Lucy

Lucy was all exited (while on the couch with me),
after I told her:

Extreme HamsterTrackin' Japan

Hot Hot Hot, in the HamsterTracker™-mailbox;

Patricia sent in this wonderfull Extreme HamsterTrackin' entry

all the way from Mount Fuji

This Extreme HamsterTrackin' photo was taken in Japan. Extreme HamsterTrackin' from Mt. Fuji, by Patricia.

" Here's a picture from the top of Mt. Fuji.
I wanted to get a picture during sunrise,
but my fingers were too frozen,
and I was worried that Lucy might blow away!
Lillian (left) and Fernando (right),
my travel buddies,
are also in the shot.
They're at the edge of the main crater,
with the highest point in the background.
" - Patricia

Extreme HamsterTracker™-shouts to Patricia,

Wakin' Lucy... (again)

Lucy has (still) been ignoring me these last couple of evenings.
So again, we're trainin' Lucy to wake up earlier, today,
by giving her a treat: After I gave Lucy her treat, she started foolin';

Training to wake up Lucy earlier AGAIN.
" Where's the promised treat, Dude? " - Lucy

I just gave it to her, so I asked if she already pouched it;

Training to wake up Lucy earlier AGAIN.
" No Dude, Look! " - Lucy

I was not willing on giving in now,
so I promised a new treat on her next appearance;

Training to wake up Lucy earlier AGAIN.
" Tough bargain'in' Dude,
I think I'll get out of here then...
" - Lucy

Then it really noticed:
Lucy walks backwards to her bedroom,
EVERYTIME !!!

I think Lucy is lovingly silly in this thing! ;-)

Wakin' Lucy...

Lucy has been ignoring me these last couple of evenings.
She keeps on sleeping, getting up, only after I went to bed.
Every morning Lucy wants attention;
3 minutes before I should leave to get to work.

Today we're trainin' Lucy to wake up earlier,
by giving her a treat; (she LOVES that!)

I got the flash setting wrong during this photoshoot,
it was set to night time photography,
therefore you can see Lucy's every move in these pictures.

That qualifies as a genuine "Blessing in disguise", doesn't it?

Then, let there be Software:

Without going into details on how it's developed,
here are some screenshots of a software module,
which will be incorporated in the HamsterTracker™-server software,
in the near future:

The software reads all three sensors,

as well as the trend (going up/down, or staying the same).

After some modifications on the HamsterTracker™-iButton-server,
the system was Hot-Plugable,
meaning, that removing a sensor, while the system is running,
doesn't disturb it:

These are REAL measurements,

One of the great things in running this website,
is all the awesome reactions it receives.

Via email, Snail-mail, Smoke-signals, MORSE-code, Instant Messaging, SMS,
as well as Lucy's Guestbook!

All reactions, are very valuable to HamsterTracker™,
but this Guestbook entry no. 724, needs more attention:

" I am a surgeon here in Chicago, IL and I wanted to let you know that I am totally in love with Lucy!
I keep a picture of her above the operating table here in the hospital
so that all of my patients can smile to her right before they go under.

Thanks for the great site!

HamsterTracker™ Temperature Controlled Proximity Sensor

The HamsterTracker™ Technical Department is always looking out for new improvements.
So they came up with an idea of using one of the recently bought iButton-temperature sensors,
to let the computer make an educated guess if Lucy is in her bedroom.

If there is a higher temperature in her bedroom as opposed to the environment,
we can assume that Lucy is in there (or was pretty shortly ago)...

So we need a sensor holder, to put UNDER Lucy's bedroom.
This way, Lucy never knows the sensor is there,
and there are no wires or other hardware in her cage.

Using a stack of (donated) coasters,
HamsterTracker™ started workin' on a prototype:

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
Mark the outline of the iButton (here in it's holder).

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
I used a very blunt knife here to cut it out,
a couple of times.
Note the gutter for the wire...

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
Using ( lots o' ) glue...

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
Stack all coasters properly...

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
And press firmly.

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
Test-fit...

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
This is how it will be implemented

Making the iButton Temperature controlled proximity sensor.
Hopefully Lucy will be sleeping right on top of the sensor,
and we can measure a rise in temperature.

To be Continued...

A Lot o' Fun behind the scenes!

The website transfer didn't go as smooth as hoped,
(it took more than seven weeks, and a lot o' emails),
when it went back online, it was 95% functional (!)

Although some data (another 3% of the 100%) on the poll and ratings was lost during this transfer,
the modified scripts worked like a charm.

Last friday night I got the last thing resolved (the last 2%),
so HamsterTracker.com is now fully functional and compliant to the previous version!!!

So this weekend, I had some fun,
doing other projects (as opposed to the [lengthy] website-transfer-project(s)).

I printed some photographs of Lucy,
and filled a new picture-frame...
(while saving the previous photo-frame of Lucy 2.0.)

HamsterTracker(tm) projects, done behind the scenes!
Here's the new (prototype) photo-frame.
I should have used some tape or other sticky stuff,
to keep it all in place,
it's moving, as I write this...

Then there is the other project;
improving all webcam stands...

It took a while, but then it hit me...
Use (unused-,) (beer-/whiskey-) glasses as a base to put a webcam on!

That doesn't block the light,
so other webcams, have more light!

Simple isn't it?
I wonder why I didn't think of it sooner:

HamsterTracker(tm) projects, done behind the scenes!
Note the differences with the picture above!

I am waiting for Lucy to wake up,
to tell and show her all about this!
